This was taken in October of 1901 and depicts many things about the docks at New Bedford at the time.
If you look at the larger version you can see the details better.

The more time you take to look at the details the more you can notice, such as the person sitting on the
wharf on the right and the man in the door of the shack as others walk in front of it.(mid level left).
At mid point in the picture is a barge with a house or a work building built on it.
You can see that it is lower and it is floating down at water level.
Note the whale oil barrels and "Nelson's Boat Baazar"
At this time in history the whaling industry was on deciline. They had found oil in Pennsylvania... |
