Union and Purchase Streets 1907
New Bedford
This view is looking north up Purchase street.
In this view can be seen the trolleys that were the public transportation of the day.
The image was from a postcard that was popular at the time.
In 1912 Purchase Street north of Union was widened for several blocks.
The buildings on westerly side (on left) was demolished or altered to create a broader street for the successful commercial district.
This allowed for the creation of the wider street to accomodate traffic from more vehicles. Click on the image for an enlargement
