As of 1897 the store at this location had been in business for two generations.
F.S. Brightman took over the store in 1893 after serving as a clerk under Edwin Dews for 12 years.
He ran a jobbing, stationary business dealing in both wholesale and retail sales of blank books, commercial stationery, office supplies, twine, paper bags and wrapping papers.
Mr. Brightman did well supplying the mills and other commercial customers. He was his own "commercial traveller" with a route covering a broad area of southeastern Massachusetts. |
He was also the sole agent for sales in the greater New Bedford area of the Boston Sunday Herald and Sunday Globe, selling up 7,000 papers in one day.
His business including store rooms occupied all 3 floors of the frame building.
Note: At one point, the street numbers changed for Union, Purchase and some other streets as the streets were lengthened etc..
