In 1897 Allen Smith Jr. ran this livery, hack and boarding stable in New Bedford that had already been at that location since around 1857. He sold bicycles as well.
The stable was established by Harvey Sherman and Samuel Bliss who ran it under the name Sherman & Bliss.
This fine establishment was open 24 hours a day and had room for 35 horses.
They specialized in furnishing nice and new hacks for weddings, funeral, christenings and private parties.
In an 1897 publication it said:
"Special attention is given to catering for the trade in transient visitors to the city"
A person could "secure a carriage in short order by telephoning to Mr. Smith his number is --357-3-- and orders so received are promptly filled."
"Many horses are boarded at the stable. Their owners can be certain from past experience that the equines will always receive the best of care."
