New Bedford, Ma.
1860 Book Of Ordinances
Main Drains and Common Sewers

As approved by the Governor on March 17, 1841 (This happens to be St Patricks Day)

This section concerns ordinances in 1860 New Bedford, Ma. for the Main Drains and Common Sewers of the city.
Part of this ordinance stated that a person would be responsible for some cost of the main drain or sewage system if they made use of it by connecting from their cellar or land meaning their property into the main drain or common sewer.
It discusses liens and the sale of a persons property in regards to non- payment.
It discusses the city's financial responsibility of the system and the manner of appeal for an aggrieved property owner.
One can imagine as it is today a property owner may need to hire a New Bedford plumber or construction workers to dig the drain pipe ditches from their property to connect with the city system, or need a lawyer from New Bedford to defend against a case of being overcharged for his sewer drain.
